Khyber Pass Afghani Restaurant

We're still on a bit of an East Village bender here at "A Year in Manhattan" and we're going to share with you another unusual and inexpensive restaurant find in the neighborhood: Khyber Pass, at 34 Saint Marks Place (8th Street between 2nd and 3rd Aves).

We practically tripped and fell on this place, and we were irresistably drawn in by the eerie red glow that permeated the entrance and the inside.

We typically eat our Afghani food at Bamiyan on 3rd Ave at 26th Street (look for the beautiful heavy oak door), but I felt like the food here was quite a bit better.

The prices were very reasonable, a rare surprise for a NYC restaurant. Most of the entrees were in the $10-13 range.

Let me strongly recommend one of the dishes we ordered: the shireen palow. It was one of the most interesting and unusual things we've ordered in a while. I'll share with you the comments my dinner companion blurted out after her first taste: "This rice dish epitomizes everything I ever wanted in life. A little spontaneity, something exotic, new and different." And this is somebody who rarely gushes about a meal.

And if the inexpensive and exotic fare wasn't enough, be sure to rent one of the hookahs during your dinner. Only an exta $15. We're not huge fans of smoking, but when in Rome....
